The plot is simple, a bit cheesy, filled with obvious misunderstandings; it promotes love, friendship, care, understanding one another, forgiveness, etc. etc… Yet it is still packed with action, a couple of funny moments and plenty of moral messages. Everything is expressed with such minimalism that it doesn't become dull; therefore it is really hard to dislike this movie. However it relies too much on the storyline and it is excessively simplistic in the other two Arts a movie should be made of: image and sound.
About image Toy Story 3 is far from extraordinary. Colors, textures, shadows, facial expressions, are not elaborate, instead it looks as if in this field Pixar has made no improvement at all since Toy Story 1, while DreamWorks for example gives us new eye-candy every time (see How to Train Your Dragon).
The soundtrack feels as a mere accompaniment and I can't remember being impressed by any of the tracks used in this movie. In addition to that, all the tracks I did recognize are the same as in Toy Story 1: so no improvement there as well.
I understand this is a feel-good movie which might make you shed a couple of tears, but it doesn't convey extraordinary joy or sadness, euphoria or thrill. So why is it being praised so much? Is it the nostalgia factor? Is it because of the Toy Story trademark? Or is it just because it's a Pixar? Whatever the answer I don't believe this movie deserves more than 2.5 stars. It’s just an average!
