Tripti Mitra was born in Dinajpur on October 25th, 1925. Her father was Ashutosh Bhaduri and mother was Shailabala Debi. Studied upto 6th standard in Dinajpur Minor School. Then from 7th standard she studied in Pyaricharan School, Kolkata and passed the Higher Secondary Examination from there in the year 1943. After that she got admitted in Ashutosh College but had to leave study as she got a job in ARP. She was a stage actor since her teens. After watching her stage performance in “Nabanna”, director Khaja Ahmed Abbas took her to Bombay to act in Gana Natya Sangha’s film “Dharti Ke Lal” in 1943. Her first Bengali film was “Pathik” in 1953 directed by Debaki Kumar Basu. Tripti Mitra founded their own theatre group named “Bahurupee” in the year 1948. She received Sangeet Natak Academy Award in 1962. She got “Padmasree” in the year 1971. She was awarded “Kalidas Sanman” by MP Govt. in 1989. She was selected as visiting fellow of Shantiniketan in 1981. From 1975 – 1980 she was ‘Akashbani’s’ (AIR) producer Emeritus. She married with legendary stage actor-director Shambhu Mitra in 1945. She is a mother of one daughter Sonali Mitra who is also a eminent stage and film actress.
