    Tulsi Chakraborty is one of the most powerful comic actors of Bengali films and created his own place in the heart of audiences. Tulsi Chakraborty was born on 3rd March, 1899 in Kolkata .His father used to work in a transferable job in the Indian Railways. Due to his father’s untimely death, Tulsi had spent his childhood in his uncle Prasad Chakraborty's place. He didn’t get the privilege of good education. But he was a versatile genius who was a proficient dancer, singer, tabla and pakhowaj player. He had learnt Dancing from Guru Debkantha Bagchi. He was a skilled Parallel bar and Horizontal Bar player and instantly got a job in Moti Roy’s Circus. After one year, he also joined in a press as a compositor. In 1916, actor-director Aparesh Chandra Mukhopadhay was highly moved by the dedication and will power of young Tulsi and took him under his tutelage as a trainee artist.

    He made his debut in director Premankur Atorthi’s film “Punorjanmo” in 1933.But he got his first commercial success from Manmoyee Girls School in 1935. And then he mesmerized audience by his brilliant comic acting in many Bengali films. He also got a major offer in Satyajit Ray’s Pather Panchali in the role of Apu’s teacher Prasanna Gurumoshai. But the real breakthrough in his career was his role in Satyajit Ray’s movie “Paras Pathor” where he played the role of the protagonist who had found a magical stone. This film is still remembered by all for his brilliant performance. His last film was Ajit Banerjee’s Ami Ratan (1978) which got released after his death in 1961.
