Born in a non-descript little village called Bharadah in Saptari, Nepal, Udit Narayan braved se veral obstacles to reach the pinnacle of his present day success. It is worth mentioning that today even his son Aditya Narayan has started lending his voice much to crowd popularity. His wife Deepa Narayan and he have composed for an album - Dil Deewana. Aditya has acted in movies like Rangeela, Pardes, Jab Pyar Kisi Se Hota Hai. He has been the conductor of the Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Challenge 2007, Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Lil Champs and we are going to see him as the host of the Sa Re Ga Ma Pa 2009 competition.
Udit Narayan, before moving to India, Mumbai in 1975 on a scholarship for music had sung songs for the Nepalese radio in Nepali, Maithili,Bhojpuri. In Mumbai he trained intensively in Indian classical music in the Bharatiya Vidya Bhawan. Soon he started singing in Hindi followed by Bengali and English too.
In 1980 he sang with Md. Rafi in Unees Bees and that became the launching pad for a mega career in the world of Hindi filmi music. 1988 brought him laurels for Quamat Se Quamat Tak which also took Alka Yagnik to heights of fame. Soon he got signed for another Amir Khan starrer - Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar. Simultaneously he was acting for Nepali films which however did not bring him much accolades. Narayan decided to invest his energy in singing. Film after film followed and he became a household name. Some of his most remembered songs are for films like Quamat Se Quamat Tak, Dil, Ashiqi, Mohra, Phir Bhi Dil Hai Hindusthani, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Dilwaley Dulhaniya Le Jayengey, Devdas, Veer Zara etc. These have made him the recipient of several awards.
In 2006 April Udit Narayan got into a controversy wherein a certain Ranjana Jha of the Supual district of Nepal claimed that Narayan was her legitimate husband. Narayan immediately hushed the matter through an out-of-court settlement.
