Universal Soldier has 3 series in all; the first part as “Universal Soldier” was released in 1992 directed by none other than Mr. Roland Emmerich. The one person who has given us films like 2012, 10,000BC, James Bond: The Day after Tomorrow, Godzilla, Independence Day, and etc. The film was as usual super hit and was being applauded by many. The second part as “Universal Soldier: The Return” was being released in 1999 and was directed Mr. Mic Rodgers. Who is familiarly known as the Stunt Coordinator, worked in many films such as in The Final Destination, Iron Man, Apocalypto, Mr. & Mrs Smith, Charlie’s Angels, and etc. This was his first film, and it is uptill now, as a Director and the film went overall good but worth watching who has seen the first part. The third part released now, 2009 in US and 2010 in India, directed by another director this time also, John Hyams. This film is obviously not as good compared to his both the prior versions, but you would definitely not feel disappointed after watching it if you are a fan of Universal Soldiers.
Story is simple; a terrorist group has kidnapped the two kids of the Mr. President and threatened him to release their near about hundreds of men from their jails. By stealing their top most secret technology they had also threatened them to drop a nuclear bomb which they had created and which was more powerful than any other nuclear bombs in history. When the commandos of the US army tried to stop them, their Universal Soldiers killed all the US soldiers. Universal Soldiers aka an elite fighter genetically altered into a programmable killing machine; which they had created with the help by one corrupted scientist which was earlier use to work with US government. Now US government made their own Universal Soldiers but unfortunately they were not that capable of fighting against the enemy. So with no option they had brought back their old fighter, who is very capable of being Universal Soldier “Luc Deveraux” (Jean-Claude Van Damme). And now he is on a mission, alone, to fight against the battle of enemy and their highly programmable elite fighter “Universal Soldiers”.
The story is simple and the screenplay of the film is yet again simple. The genre of the movie is action, but after watching the whole movie, it can’t be said the real hardcore of action. Still the movie manages to entertain the action movie lovers. And overall it is definitely not disappointing the fans of “Universal Soldiers” series.
Direction by John Hyams was fabulous. What impress me in his direction are the soldier war sequences. This execution was simply very impressive and has been executed as real as it is meant to be. The climax between the enemy universal soldier and between “Luc Deveraux” is just out-standing. For any action movie lovers and the ones who know little about basics of film making, they would surely love to watch this.
And rest, the performances, all the technicalities, etc. were simply upto the mark. Ofcourse the performance given by Jean-Claude is always marvelous as usual.
If you are an action movie lover and/or you had watched the prior two series of the “Universal Soldiers”, then I am sure you would definitely not like to miss this one.
