Utpal Dutta is an amazing actor of Bengali cinema whose screen presence and charismatic personality has given him a special place in everyone’s heart. Utpal Dutta was born on 29th March, 1929 in Shillong. He did his schooling in St.Edmont High School and passed his matriculation from St. Xaviers’ Collegiate School in 1945. In 1949, he completed his B.A . in English from St.Xaviers’ College.He was fluent in English, French, Spanish, German, Hindi, etc. He used to teach in South Point High School for a long time.In 1960 , he got married to actress Shova Sen and had a daughter. Utpal Dutta was basically an active stage artist and theatre personality of high repute. He made his debut as an actor in the silver screen in Madhu Basu’s “Micheal Madhusudhan” in 1950 which gave him instant recognition. He was an expert in Shakespearian literature and was involved with Shakespearian International Theatre Company. He was also an active member of Gananatya Sangha. Being a believer of ‘theatre for human cause and emancipation’he wrote,produced and directed brilliant plays nad had done some street plays in favour of political goals set by the leftist politics. He had established Little Theatre Group , People’s Theatre Group , Arya opera, Vivek yatra Samaj. Brekht Society was his brainchild which was formed in 1984 which was presided by Satyajit Ray. He had written 100 plays, and 6 essay books.
Sriman Prthviraj(1973) , Amanush (1973) , Chutir Phade (11975) , Moina (1978) , Joi Baba felunath (1979) , Aguntuk(1992) , Padmanadir Majhi (1993) are some of his outstanding performances in the films.. He had worked in famous Bollywood hits like Golmaal. In 1969, he got national award for his brilliant performances in the film ‘Bhuban Some’. He was honoured by Sangeet Natak Award. But the awards confeered upon him were declined by the great thespian. This great actor passed away on 19th August, 1993
