    Utpal Dutt's first Hindi film was not Guddi but "Saat Hindusthani" directed by K. A Abbas. Many may not know, Amitabh Bachhan's first film was this film {made in 1969]. Utpal Dutt portrayed a Punjabi Sikh army person,while Amitabh was an untouchable. The film was based on Goa-Liberation. The seven Hindusthanis stand in a body iconising national integration and they held the common goal. The seven ethnic classes grouped together symbolize the Nation as a whole.

    Utpal Dutt participated in English theatre when he was a student at St. Xavier's College, Kolkata. He came in association with Geoffrey Kendal's Shakespeareana Company and toured extensively from "47 to "53. He founded the Little Theatre Group and initially staged English plays. Later, he staged Bengali plays like "Kollol", "Angar"and "Tiner Talwar" without which the annals of Indian Theatre will remain incomplete. Besides, English Utpal Dutt was also at home in Germn, Spanish and Latin.

    The entire film( made in black and white) was shot in the desert of Rajasthan. K. K. Mahajan's camera-work was superb. Utpal Dutt was unparellel in his sereo-comic style, especially, when he is out for hunting and ends with no hunt. But, the explorer Shom shaheb(Utpal Dutt) explores the wretched life suffered by his subordinate whom he had suspended. Shom also unearthed the virtue of humanity, neither diminished nor cloyed by the struggles for existence. It is a document of true humanity.

    Utpal Dutt's "Bhuban Shom" directed by Mrinal Sen in '69 is acknowledged as the trend-setter of New Wave Cinema. The film was based on a story by the famous Bengali writer Banaphool. Dutt's role was of a high ranking officer of the Railway, who happens to land at the hearth of his subordinate staff . Shom is carried away by the hospitality of his subordinate's wife(Suhasini Mule). Externally, Shom is stonny-hearted, but there runs a stream of pity within.

    utpal dutt played a hero opposite Suhasini Mulay (television actress and aamirs mother in Lagaan) in "Bhuvan Shom" and voice over for the film was given by Amitabh bacchan
