Utsav is based on the 6th century A.D. when courtesans were given respect in the community and to have a welfare standard life. There is a big place were all courtesans live and in that a women name Vasantasena (Rekha) was considered as the beauty queen. She was also in some higher position among all that prostitutes who were living there. She had a passionate affair with a poor man Charudutt, a singer and musician, and married to Aditi (Anuradha Patel). Samsthanak (Shashi Kapoor) is the relative of the King and an ardent admirer of Vasantasena’s beauty. She doesn’t like Samsthanak at all, as he tries to win her with power and not by love. When Samnsthanak finds out that Vasantasena and Charudutt are having an affair, he makes an attempt for the murder of Vasantasena. By his political power, he declares that Charudutt has killed her and the reason he puts is for stealing gold ornaments that she was wearing. By his order Charudutt was given a death sentence. As the capital punishment is about to happen, Vasantasena appears and spills out the truth.
