“Uttoran” was created by Sandip Ray from a tale of his late father Satyajit Ray in 1994. The film remains as a venture of academic interest because Satyajit Ray won a posthumous national award for best screenplay (1994). “Uttoran” is all about humanity, dedication, honesty & transgression. Soumitra Chattopadhyay has played the defiant character of Dr. Nihar Sen Gupta who faces some atrocious situations on his way to a seminar on Medical Science at Jamshedpur. The camerawork by Barun Raha,(Ganashatru, Shakhaprosakha) a Ray protégé, has been vivid, detailed & eloquent. Editing by Dulal Dutta has been up to the standards & makes the voyeur arrested to the screen. Sandip’s direction & music is highly influenced by his monumental father, but nevertheless he stamps an authenticity of his own right. The rest of the cast comprising Bina, Sadhu Meher, Subhendu Chattopadhyay, Minakshi Goswami, Debotosh Ghosh, Soven Lahiri, Pallavi Roy & Anup Mukherjee gave natural & grass-root performances. “Uttoran” did average business for the theatrewallahs, but for filmy folks it will last as the last evidence of the legacy of Satyajit Ray.
