First thing first, people who have loved Susan Sarandon-Julia Roberts “Stepmom”, it’s a request please leave the film back home and then only you can enjoy this Indian Adaptation. I won’t be comparing the film with the original Hollywood version, simply for the reason that this one has been officially adapted from the original makers, given perfect due, not basking on originals glory and has been totally Indian-ized {ok, NRI-ized to be precise}. But still expectations are bound to interfere and hence let’s find out does this Karan Johar production’s stylish family drama meet the bare minimum expectations {after omitting the reminder of the original}.

“We are Family” is story of Aman {Arjun Rampal} and his girlfriend Shreya {Kareena Kapoor} both successfully managing their life and work. Aman decides to share his past with Shreya and wants her to be part of it. Aman introduces her to his Ex Wife Maya {Kajol} and his kids {Anjali, Ankush & Aleya}. The kids instantly reject Shreya and things turn sour for Aman at both ends. {Spoilers Alert} Meanwhile Maya is diagnosed with Cancer and thus Aman moves back to her. Maya tries her level best to take care of the family, but she knows she cannot and at that point she gets back Shreya in their life. She wants Shreya to gel with the kids and take care of them. Will Shreya be able to take care of the family, well that’s what the film about?

Story is simple with some nice twists. The writers have included some good moments which give us smiles and tears. Screenplay takes care of dram, feel good scenes and emotional moments perfectly. Some scenes which are the highlight of the film are – Kareena with kids for first time, All Kajol – Kareena scenes at home together, Arjuns silent outburst, Kajol – Kareena Hospital Scene, Kajol’s Pre-Climax gifts to the family and the family’s gift to Kajol, and few more. All these scenes give you smile as well as make your eyes moist. The narration is bit slow in the second half and at some scenes goes total slow, but as per the requirement of the film it’s perfect. Editing needed to be bit crisp in second half, rest all is ok. Dialogs are nice and manage to do its effect at right time; still some more family bonding was required.

Music has been Karan Johar’s films USP, but sadly in this film the music is not as per the standards of the Dharma Productions. Rehmokaram is the best song in the film and very well used too. Jailhouse Rock looked tacky in the promos, but manages to entertain you in the film. Hamesha in the anti climax goes well with the mood of the film. Rests all are ok.

Siddharth Malhotra had a big task on his shoulders as he directed an official adaptation. Making a copy is easier than making an original adaptation, as out here people who have not seen the original will also compare with the original film and the makers don’t have an exit pass. He manages to get flying marks and has done his job with total dedication. He knew on technical level or any other level he cannot do anything better than the original, thus decided to focus on the performances and the screenplay. He succeeds and manages to impress us with his debut film. On the negative side, the bonding between Kareena and the teenager daughter was too quick and unconvincing, also the Arjun Rampal bonding with his wife, girlfriend was not up to the mark.

Kajol is the main hero of this film and deserves applauses for doing this role. She has done a marvelous performance and raised her bar of excellence. Arjun Rampal plays a silent spectator to the whole event and impresses us with it. Kareena Kapoor gives a matured performance and does not go wrong anywhere with her typical antics. All the three kids Aanchal Munjal, Nominath Ginsburg and Diya Sonecha have done a great job. So overall almost everyone has performed well in this film.

So bol meri “Filmi Khopdi” is film mein kitna hai dum ?

Dum hai kaafi emotional dum hai. After watching the dead promos and the mammoth impression of Stepmom, my expectation with this film was zero. I was ready to tear the film, but the makers won to melt my heart. The film might be bit slow for some, also the non popularity of songs but overall its a nice feel good – emotional drama for all those who love their family. No it’s not the typical Karan Johar or Sooraj Bartajya type Indian family sob story, but this time a NRI family sob story with some good candy floss attached to it.
