    What’s in the Name ?

In 80’s Ketan Mehta Made a T.V Serial Named “Mr.Yogi” which was based on a hit gujarati novel. The serial had Mr.Yogi an NRI coming to India to select girls from different Sun sign, so twelve episodes for each Sun sign and last one for climax. The director had taken different but all popular T.V Actress of that time for all the different roles. Ashuotosh Gowarikar comes back with the same story but with a big bang on big screen. Instead of taking different girls for different Sun sign, he has played a gamble of taking Priyanka Chopra in all different characters. So will the gamble pay? Let’s find out.

“What’s your rashee?” is story of Yogesh Patel {Harman Baweja} studying and working in Chicago. He has to come to India as his family is in trouble, his elder Brother Jeetu {Dilip Joshi} has suffered huge losses in share market and thus his parents {Anjan Srivastava, Manju Singh} decide to call him. They want Yogesh to get married in next 10 days as on the day of his marriage he will get lots of property of his grandfather. After agreeing to them Yogesh decides to meet twelve different girls of all different sun sign. He is helped by his uncle cum marriage arranger Debu Kaka {Darshan Jariwala} and thus they start meeting different girls like Anjali, Sanjana, Kajal, Hansa, Rajni, Chandrika, Malika, Nandini, Pooja, Vishakha, Bhavna and Jhankana {Priyanka Chopra]. Thus starts the journey to find the right girl for Yogesh Patel.

Story is simple, but entertaining. Screenplay is gripping and enjoyable despite of getting the feeling of repetitive scenes of girl watching. Every character of Priyanka Chopra is developed in proper manner and the director has given required screen time to each of the characters. This also works as a bit negative point for the film as in second half the length starts worrying you. Thus a strict editing {looks like the editor was only for namesake} was required and some scenes and songs should have been chopped. Instead of full songs they should had kept only one paragraph. Camera work is strictly average and nothing to boost about.

Music by Sohail Sen is good and some songs are fantastic like the title song, Aja Lehrake, Bikhri Bikhri, Pyaari Pyaari, Ghoongat mein Gori. My Personal fav is Jaoo Na in terms of Music. Manoonga Manoonga along with title track are best choreographed songs. But overall there are thirteen songs , so other songs could had been little bit trimmed keeping in mind the screen length.

Ashutosh Gowarikar has always tried to give us some different and hard hitting subjects like Lagaan, Swades and Jodha Akbar. A sudden jump from such films to a romantic comedy is quite shocking, as the film is quite average film and nothing such of the director’s caliber. But also on other side applause to the director for breaking the image and trying such different and simple subject. Some characters are so lovable like of Anjali, Sanjana, Kajal and Pooja. Some quite interesting like of Rajni, Bhavna, Chandrika and Vrishaka. Some touching like of Jankana and Hansa. Rests were ok. Ashu we dont need a Rom Com from you, we need big films from you and by Big we dont mean the lenght.

On performances basis the film is out and out Priyanka Chopra’s film, she has fitted so well in all the different characters and does not look repetitive at all. The actress inside her is growing day by day and this film will be among her best works too. Surprise Surprise Harman Baweja was good {yes I am saying this, who had trashed Harman’s Performance after watching Love Story 2050}. I would say all marks to Ashutosh for showing us the real Harman and not a Hrithik Roshan Clone. Darshan Jariwala was a sweet support in the film. Manju Singh, Dilip Joshi, Rajesh Vivek and Anjan Srivastava were nice.

So bol meri “Filmi Khopdi” is film mein kitna hain dum ?

Dum hain aur entertaining bhi hain, only worries is too much of songs and screen length of 3.5 hrs. If you can digest that then the film is good time pass clean family entertainer. Also have to oversight the fact that this film is made by Ashutosh Gowarikar and his past films. Waise bhi who kehte hain na..What’s in the name…
