My Rating

  • a ‘YAMLA’ attempt

Yamla Pagla Deewana rating: 7 out of 10(Divya Solgama wrote on 14 Jan 2011)

In 80’s When Dhramendra was a Star and Sunny Deol was the New Kid On the Block who had made his mark, came a Multi starer film SULTANAT. That movie was a big budget multi starer action drama, but people were more excited to see Father and Son duo in a same frame and in a proper full length role. Sadly the movie dint live up to the expectation. After that both of them came together against each other in KSHATRIYA , which was also a Multi starer action drama and again failed to meet the expectations. After decades both came together with Bobby Deol in APNE. A film which was totally opposite genre of the family members, surprisingly the film worked and people got to see the emotional side of these Macho men’s. Now they are back to reveal another unusual side of theirs which might tickle your funny bone in YAMLA PAGLA DEEWANA. Let’s see if they manage to impress their viewers or might end up down against the mammoth expectations.

YPD is story of Paramveer Singh Dhillon {Sunny Deol} a NRI settled in Canada with his canadian wife and mother {Nafisa Ali}. One day he comes to know that his father Dharam Singh {Dharmendra} and Gajodhar Singh {Bobby Deol} are alive in India, thus he comes to India to find them and take back home. When he reaches India he comes to know that both of them are Super Con guys. He reveals the truth to both of them but none believe him. Meanwhile Gajodhar falls in love with Sahiba {Kulraj Randhawa} who belongs to a perfect Panjabi family. Sahiba’s brothers try to create problems between the lovers and separate them. At that time Paramveer comes to rescue and takes the situation in his hand. What happens next is the entire movie about.

Story is typical filmi full of loads of Masala films from 80’s and even has shades of Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge. But all these elements like Lost and Found, etc are shown in good humor. There is always a witty line after such acts, which makes the viewers digest all these scenes easily and enjoy them. The smartness of writing is also seen in the one liners part, which are witty and naughty managing to bring smile to your face. Screenplay is good but drags a bit near the interval part in the first half, also in the second half somewhere the directors loses his control, but immediately takes it back with some or another good scenes. There are plenty of good entertaining scenes starting from the Credit Titles, Sunny getting conned by Bobby, Sunny fighting Johnny levers men’s in bar, Bobby spoofing Sholay/Satte pe Satta, etc, Sunny and Bobby meeting Anupam Kher and family, The whole Canada chapter by Sucheta Khanna, Sunny getting drunk, Climax featuring Sunny’s Scream and Dhramendra Fighting and many more. On flip side The Emotional bonding scene between Sunny and Dharmendra is a big letdown. The whole Sahiba-Miraza story slows down the mood of the film and the shoddy climax which jumps out of nowhere. Camera work is good and has done perfect justice to the film. Editing needed to be bit tight in both the half’s of the film. If the film would had been bit trimmed down the impact would had doubled. Still thanks to the good merits of the film it manages to entertain you in a big way.

Music is good especially Tinku and Chanda De Rang. Chamki could have been avoided. The title song is a visual treat, sadly the slow version is used and the main version is saved for the end credits. It should had been the vice versa. Background music is good and keep’s the tempo flowing.

Sameer Karnik had some interesting movies in past, but sadly none managed to make a mark. All ended up as average to below average products. He was the only worrying element when the promos hit the market. But luckily he does full justice to the film and makes it worth more than its promos. Somewhere in both half’s he misses his bus and goes hay way, but again comes back with some interesting or humorous scenes. The whole idea of showing the clips from lost and found films in the opening scene prepares you to enjoy this mindless masala entertainer. The movie had all the merit to become a classic comedy, but ends up as a decent above average entertainer, which is also good in comparison to the films we witnessed in recent past.

Dhamendra is a darling and the biggest USP of this film. He looks great in some scenes and funny in others. At this age too Papaji manages to impress us with his Dharam Garam stuffs. In second half he has very little to offer, But in climax bounces back. Sunny is the one who impresses above all the three. He is fantastic in all the comedy and action scenes. Sadly both father and son goofs up in the emotional scenes. Bobby Deol is bearable and has done a decent job. Kulraj looks sweet and beautiful. Anupam Kher, Mukul Dev and Sucheta Khanna are outstanding. Johnny lever, Nafisa Ali and others are good. Punneet issar, Amit Mistry and Himanshu are wasted. Sunny’s Canadian wife and kids too does their part with ease.

So bol meri ‘Filmi Khopdi’ is film mein kitna hai dum ?

Dum hai kaafi dum hai, thoda kahin pe kutch kum hai. The movie has everything you want to see. Good action, humor, songs, drama and mindless masala stuffs. You want to see Dharmendra rock with his kids and he does, you want to see Sunny screaming, fighting and yet in control – he does that, you want to see bobby in his idiotic avatar and he too does that. So in short this film has all what a typical Masala Entertainer needs. Only some good editing and length would have been taken care the impact could had been more. Thus the movie won’t make you out and out Pagla [mad] after watching a mad cap nor out and out Deewana [crazy] making you gung ho after it, But indeed is a out and out Yamla {Clean hearted} attempt . The movie will be a huge hit on home viewing, but out here too will satisfy all the masala entertainer lovers.

    Ratings : 3.5/5

P.S - For intellectual's pls avoid this film and wait for next week.
