Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara rating: 7 out of 10(Divya Solgama wrote on 15 Jul 2011)

As a kid I remember my parents watching a Raj Kapoor starrer film ‘Around The World” and my mom wanted me to see all the foreign locations in that film. The film traveled all over the globe and I guess started the trend to feature foreign locations in films after that. Decades later Yash Chopra replaced Mahabhleshwar/ Ooty with Switzerland and 90’s belonged to Mauritius. But almost all these films had these locations as just part of beauty and not the part of script as it was in ‘Around The World’ and few other films. This year Farhan Akhtar & Zoya Akhtar brings us a road trip film featured in Spain along with backup of star power, so let’s find out will this film do justice to the Locations by including it as part of the film or might just end up using it as another plus point for visual treat?

“Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara” is story of three school friends Arjun {Hrithik Roshan}, Imraan {Farhaan Akhtar} & Kabir {Abhay Deol}. They had made a pact that whenever any of them is going to get married they will travel to Spain and choose their favorite adventure sport as a bachelor party. Its Kabir’s marriage with Natasha {Kalki} and thus Kabir organizes the trip and invites his friends. The friends meet after a long time with some grudges and love beneath them. They are joined by a diving instructor Laila {Katrina Kaif}. What happens in the Road trip is what the entire film about.

Story is simple and might give you slight reminders from ‘Dil Chahta Hai’, ‘Rock On’ and few more films. But these are just minor references or else the film its total original on its own. The first half of the film is total entertaining and kiddish fun, but the drama starts after second half and we wish some more work on the story part would had been done. As at times the drama looked forced and total out of theme, maybe some good amount of editing would had helped. The length might be also a worry as it is more than two and half hour plus, making those dramatic scenes bit dragging in the second half. Now on the positive part the film has some brilliant moments which keep you entertained, especially in the first half. Scenes like The Engagement Party of Abhay, Abhay talk in pub, Hrithik Conference on road followed by Abhay-Farhan fun over their English teacher and the accent, Toilet screaming scene, Farhan throwing Hrithiks phone followed by the grudge talks, Farhan gifting Hrithik pink phone, The whole Diamond Biscuit lines, Hrithik Katrina talks over life and its moments, The Adventure sports, Abhay’s engagement ring confusion, Abhay’s freaking out followed by the New pact at the final sport event and few more makes you remember them even after the end of the film.

Camera work is superb; the film captures the spirit and mood of ‘Spain’ by exploring some exotic locations and cultural events of the country. The cameraman has high influence of World cinema in terms of his shorts and camera moments, which works in favor of the film.

Music by Shankar Ehsaan Loy was better than their last few works. ‘Khawabon Ke Parindey’ is awesome, followed by ‘Senorita’ where the three actors sing in their voice. Not to forget the ‘Ik Junoon’, this captures the spirit of Tomatina festival in Spain. Dil jaise and Der Lagi goes well with the film. All the Farhan Akhtar Shayaris {By Javed Akhtar} were great.

Zoya Akhtar’s ‘Luck By Chance’ was a superb film, which went bit hay way in second half and managed to get it on right track towards the end. Similarly out here too she gives us total entertainment and some kiddish fun in the first half without any double meaning jokes or swear words, but as the dramatic part begins the film seemed bit dragging and repetitive at times. She tries to come back on the track with the final sport in the end, but not like ‘Luck By Chance’. Still on overall and individual basis Zoya Succeeds in making a different style of film.

Hrithik Roshan looked cool and smart in the film. Though his role did remind of Farhan’s character from Rock On. He does justice to his role and has his moments. Abhay Deol gives a stable performance, but looked bit out of place in the film especially in the dancing scenes. Still he portrays his style in his character and gets it much better than others. Farhaan gets the best lines and is a happy go lucky character. His jokes and one liner makes you laugh at many times. The whole Hrithik-Farhaan chemistry is the best in the film. Katrina looked beautiful and has acted well in this film. I guess now she can make those entire critics mum, who claim her as wooden actor. Kalki is fine, but nothing great. Naseer’s cameo was average. Dipti Naval was wasted.

So bol meri ‘Filmi Khopdi’ is film mein kitna hai Dum?

Dum hai achca time pass fun hai in first half, with some great visual treats of exotic locations of Spain, Deep Sea diving and lots more. If you are expecting a great cinema then you might get bit disappointed. The film has all the elements to make it a cult cinema, but went bit wrong somewhere thus ending to a simple enjoyable cinema. Ignore the forced dramatic moments and the length and you will have a clean entertainer this week with some good cinematic moments.
